Rebecca bit her nails in contemplation as she read and reread the email.

To: Charisma Records

From: MMS, LLC

Subject: Meeting

Ms. Murphy,

Allow me to introduce myself. I am the investor who purchased Sophie Strong’s concert and image rights from an affiliated entity of Charisma and Eternity Music Group. As such, I have a vested interest in the reputation of my client. I have uncovered some interesting information regarding the accusations levied against her and I think it warrants a meeting. I am prepared to go to the press with this information, but prefer to handle things at the lowest level, first. Please send your avoid dates so we can get a meeting set.

It wasn’t signed but she knew it was from Connor Driscoll, Sophie’s meddlesome ghost from the past. The woman continued to chew her nails as she tried to decide what she needed to do.

The thought of informing Payne crossed her mind. She didn’t want the man thinking she was incompetent or that she’d go running to him any time there was an issue, but whoever this guy was, he had already proven himself clever once before.

“Be prepared for some trouble in the future. Don’t end up like Webb. Don’t let this man play games or pull one over on you.” Payne’s words from their last meeting rang in her ears and it gave her her answer.

Hitting the forward button on the email, she hit the letter “x” and his name populated.

“We should talk,” was all she wrote in the body of the email before hitting send.

His response was almost immediate.

“Come upstairs.”

Rebecca stood and smoothed the fabric to her lavender suit slowly. She took a deep breath, steeled her nerves and then exited her office. Each step in her perfect leather stilettos was measured as she made her way to the floor above her.

She was under no delusions. She may have slept with the man on a few occasions, but even she was not safe from having her world ripped from her. In some ways, she was responsible for this entire situation. Webb and Jacobs reported to her and had pulled their antics under her watch. While Payne was generally reasonable with her, which in and of itself was quite the feat, she could easily understand him placing this blame squarely on her shoulders.

And if that happened, there would be consequences.

There were always consequences when someone fucked up.

Rebecca only hoped that she could salvage the situation enough to count this as a close call and remind herself to never get too complacent ever again.

“Come,” Payne said at the tap on his door. Rebecca opened the door and his eyes raked her body up and down. She looked stunning in a pair of nude pumps and a light lavender suit. It was the perfect color for the season and it contrasted her complexion nicely. “Sit,” he said, directing her to the seat in front of his desk with a nod of his head.

Rebecca made her way to his desk and did as she was told, waiting for him to start the conversation.
